Forage & Lunch w/ Diego Bonetto ‘ The Weedy One’

As part of the Yila Healing Trail taking place this spring in the Shoalhaven, we are excited to be welcoming Diego Bonetto, also known as ‘The Weedy One’ to Huskisson on Thursday 17th October for a foraging expedition on the rock platform at Huskisson, followed by lunch in the Gunyah.

Diego grew up in northern Italy, where it was still common practice to collect wild produce from the land. When he moved to Australia in the mid 90s he spent many years working in orchards and garden centres and realised that his knowledge was a rare practice in modern societies. He sensed in the people around him a longing to rekindle their untapped connection to nature, and since Covid this desire for nature connection has only increased.

It is Diego’s passion to tell the story of plants, to share his knowledge and to connect with others through mutual story telling.

Spending time with Diego in itself is a treat, he’s a wonderful storyteller, and has a deep appreciation for the natural world and our place in it, “To tell the story of plants is my passion …I love to enable conversations around belonging, sustainability and agency, while eating food. The old stories and flavours offering an alternative for people to re-engage with their neighbourhoods and ecologies.”

He has recently released a book ‘EAT WEEDS’ – A Field Guide to Foraging and was featured in an award winning short film (see below) , take a look and you’ll be swept up in his enthusiasm too!

Join us for a wonderful morning on the beach and rock platform at Huskisson, learning about the edible plants that inhabit the foreshore and tidal pools, before heading back to the Gunyah for a lunch and continued conversation.
